This episode features an interview with Dr. Kailey Buller, a double board-certified family and emergency physician who talks about her book Surviving Tiny Humans: The Messy Truth About Parenting and Your Guide to Baby’s First Year.  Her book has been described as a mix of compassion, humour, and hard-earned experience.  She is a mother of two who had own health issues  - so she not only relates to new parents but also to local authors who sometimes struggle to balance other pressures and find time to write.


JP Riemens - Writing as Fun


This episode features an interview with JP Riemens.  The area native was a successful song writer and influential music industry producer and engineer who was once part owner of Hamilton’s famed Grant Avenue studios.  But his life had many other features as described in his memoir Slightly Below the Surface. The book not only recounts the stories that defined his life but also resonating song lyrics and the voice of a ghost.

Stephen Selk - Local and Social History


This episode features an interview with Stephen Selk, the author of  Lake Erie’s Long Point Island and the Company that Saved it.

The book is a comprehensive history of the Long Point Company, the consortium that has controlled a major part of the Long Point sand spit since before confederation. 

Stephen talked about his personal connection to Long Point and the happenstance the led him to take on this project.

Bruce McCall - Writer, Artist, Satirist

This episode pays tribute to the late writer, artist, and satirist Bruce McCall.  The Simcoe native
was a successful New York advertising executive and popular contributor to the National Lampoon, Vanity Fair, Playboy, and The New Yorker.
  He also worked as a writer for Saturday Night Live and authored two bestselling memoirs, both focusing on his early life in Norfolk County.  The podcast features an interview with Bruce's daughter Amanda who said that he developed his love of drawing and writing before the age of ten and that his celebrated career really started in his family home in Simcoe.

Autumn Demarest (Ongaro) - Cooking-Agri-Food





Autumn Demarest – formerly Ongaro – is the author of FEAD – a reference on seasonal cooking that celebrates the food and crops of Norfolk County. 

Her book mixes high-quality photography with the stories of local farms, local agricultural history, and recipes that make the most of seasonal foods.

John B. Lee - Poetry and History


Port Dover resident John B. Lee is a
three-time Poet Laureate whose work has garnered many, many prestigious national and international recognitions. 

Close to one hundred published books carry his name as an author and editor. In this interview, he discusses to two poetry collections, That’s not You and A School called Normal, and the non-fiction biography King Joe.

Kari Guson - Ecology and Wildlife



Kari Gunson is a road ecology expert and principal of the consulting firm Eco-Kare International. 


She is co-author of the book Wildlife on Roads – a handbook and reference drawing upon her years of experience working to reduce wildlife mortality in Long Point and other areas in Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada.  You can help too. Click here.

Deborah Ellis - War and Writing for Young Adults

 Deborah Ellis is a multi-award-winning writer whose works include the celebrated Breadwinner series which inspired an Academy Award nominated film and raised millions for Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan, Street Kids International Children in Crisis, and UNICEF. 

She describes her experiences in difficult circumstance around the world, writing for younger audiences, and her life in Norfolk County.

Peter Ivey - Fantasy and Adventure


Peter Ivey was raised in Port Dover, visits often, and taught for a number of years in area schools. He is an educator with experience in varied media and works as a freelance research analyst. 

He also writes fantasy and adventure novels.  

His books include The Lost Tribe series.

Janice MacLeod - Travel, Art and Romance

 

Port Dover resident Janice MacLeod is an artist and the author of the New York Times Bestseller Paris Letters.  

Janice describes her roots in Norfolk County and her path to publishing success.

Mary Fairhurst Breen - Pride and Tragicomedy

 


Mary describes herself as a late blooming author of queer tragicomedies.  But she also writes creative nonfiction, op-eds and works for younger audiences such as her most recent book 
Pride and Persistence.

Mary's book featured at Port Dover's 2024 Pride in the Park event, and afterwards talked on the phone about her books and her work helping people record their own stories.

David Beasley - History & Library Research

David Beasley is a  long-time Norfolk County resident and an author whose publications include poetry, plays, novels, nonfiction, and texts on library science. His works draw upon his travels abroad, and years as an activist and senior research librarian in New York.  


He talks about hurdles in his writing career, advantages of being a writer in Norfolk County, and his favourite pastime which may surprise given his age of 93.
